I'm renovating a house built in the early '40s and have a little question. I removed the chipboard from one of the exterior walls, which have apparently been additionally insulated at some point. Behind the chipboard, there is some form of black fabric/plastic. Behind this is insulation and then the old plank wall. Parts of this fabric/plastic broke during the demolition, so I'm planning to replace it. But what should I replace it with? Some dense plastic or should it be something that breathes a little? Thank you in advance.

Absolutely no dense plastic - Wind barrier is what you should have and it's easy to work with and doesn't cost a fortune.
I have used a lot of the "T-Vind" model from T-Emballage myself and it's available at most major building supply stores.
