We have a wall from the 30s that seems to consist of stone blocks and render/mortar. Due to roots and frost damage, the render has fallen off and it's time to repair it. The question is, what type of mortar should be used?

It doesn't have to look nice, and I assume it will crack again unless there is proper drainage behind (it's a retaining wall) and the trees with roots are removed.

There seems to be some sand in the wall, so maybe it needs to be bonded first with a primer? I was also thinking of inserting rebar into the largest holes and bending them.

Found this article on GDS, it seems like "Restaureringsbruk" (KKh 50/50/500 0-4) is the most suitable for repairing old walls, is that correct?

  • Old stone and mortar retaining wall with visible cracks and exposed roots, next to a metal utility box. Some damage and fallen plaster are evident.
  • Old stone wall with damaged plaster revealing stones underneath, surrounded by greenery and a nearby metal post.
