Hello!

I have started renovating our old barn. We have drained and put up gutters and also poured a concrete slab.

Now I'm thinking of fixing the stone wall where it has cracked, but how and with what?

Cracked stone wall in need of repair and restoration as part of a barn renovation project, displaying significant visible cracks and damage.

The plan is then to plaster the wall and paint it white. Does anyone have any tips on the approach and materials?

Best regards,
D

no one has any tips on what I should use?

Do you want it to last or just something to fill the crack with?
To begin with, it seems like it has settled in all directions, is there any sensible foundation?

Previously, there were holes in the roof and water stood frozen inside the barn, now I have dug it out, insulated, and cast a new slab. Of course, I have repaired the roof and fixed drainage around and installed gutters.

so hopefully it won't settle anymore, so I want to repair the cracks as well and sustainably as possible...

It was probably originally built with mortar B, so it likely works. The alternative is mortar A, which is harder and more similar to the stones. Chiseling out some fresh concrete stone surface in the cracks is probably a good idea - that's what you do when repairing old cast concrete structures with fine concrete to get a grip.

If the wall is moving in the cracks, it will look bad already after one winter.

Plastering concrete stone is a bit beyond my expertise - it might be best to buy a plastering system with instructions. The wall likely needs to be meshed to adhere to the substrate, thinly primed, and then plastered in layers.

Preferably, you should remove some broken stones so you can get a good connection, then add some reinforcement.

thanks for the tips!

regarding the plastering, I've been considering spray plastering, but I have no idea how it works, do you prime the wall? has anyone here done something similar?

Do you mean spraying noble rendering or that you are spraying on the plaster mortar? Either way, it requires some experience and equipment.

I was thinking noble plaster, after I've fixed the cracks. Is it difficult? I naively thought it was just about spraying it on :p

no one knows which plaster to use to do like in the movie and if it would work on my barn?

the goal is for it to become white and hide my repairs a little :)

You still need to polish the surface beforehand, a rough application that is slightly scraped off. There must absolutely not be any shiny surfaces.

Okay, do you always have to use netting? Or can I just apply 3mm of plaster c?

I had netted considering how shabby the wall is.

No point in doing anything until the settlement damage or rather the cause of it has been addressed. The cracks are shear cracks which are typical in such contexts. Probably requires some form of foundation reinforcement.

hope that I have fixed it with drainage, gutters, and excavated and cast a slab in the barn...
