We have an old insert fireplace from the 80s-90s in cast iron (I think). The smoke roof has broken and fallen down, and there are cracks in the mortar at the back. Is there anyone with experience in repairing this kind of thing, preferably in the Gothenburg area? According to a company I was in contact with, it’s just a matter of buying a new one.

  • Cast iron fireplace insert from the 80s or 90s, with visible wear and a broken smoke shelf, surrounded by a white brick wall and tools.
  • Old cast iron insert fireplace with worn, damaged interior; open door reveals cracked mortar and fallen smoke canopy. Firewood and package visible below.
  • Old cast iron fireplace insert from the 80s-90s with a broken smoke shelf and cracked mortar at the back, showing signs of wear and damage.
I think you should try it yourself with vermeculite boards, they can be bought at hardware stores for a few hundred kronor and are easily worked with a handsaw and a Morakniv to fit the fireplace.
