Hello!
We need to renovate our basement stairs from the late 60s. They are made of oak and have a plastic mat about 7mm thick. How have you others done it?! We would prefer to have stairs completely in wood!! Please share ideas and suggestions on how we can fix this nicely.

  • Basement staircase from the 1960s with oak sides and steps covered by a 7mm thick plastic mat, wooden panel walls and handrail.
  • A wooden staircase with a plastic mat covering, from the 1960s, in need of renovation. Walls are wood-paneled, showcasing a vintage style.
I think it's linoleum flooring. You can tear it off if you absolutely don't want it there, but for simplicity's sake, I would just remove the "noses" and leave the flooring as is. Then install a staircase renovation kit on top. (Or purchase the installation of it, if you don't feel like doing the angle cutting yourself, even though the staircase renovation kit comes with clear instructions.)

Hello
I'm going to be a bit boring and say that you have the optimal stairs with the linoleum mat and oak stair nosing.
But I understand, the gray mat doesn't look very exciting.
Perhaps you can sand the oak and clean the linoleum mat and place wood on the underlay so the gray mat isn't so prominent?
Otherwise, remove the mat and stair nosing and see what's underneath.
Make new oak stair nosing and add pieces of a click floor.
There is a clever tool with several arms that you place on the step, pull out the tips of the arms to the corners of the step, and tighten a screw, then you have a perfect template of that step.

But, you have the perfect stairs, fix it up and put in a dimmer lamp in the stairwell :-)

A new rug in a brighter color is an alternative. Wooden stairs make more noise and become slippery.
