Renovate walls, which plasterboard should I choose?

Planning to fix some walls in our house from -59.
Right now, they consist of first tongue and groove wood paneling with masonite on top. The masonite is then wallpapered and painted in various layers. Unfortunately, the previous owner painted with some type of sand in the paint that we can't easily remove. The plan is therefore to remove all the masonite and then put 6mm renovation plasterboard directly onto the tongue and groove.

An alternative is to let the masonite stay and put plasterboard on it or go with 13mm or 9mm plasterboard. What do you think is best? How would you do it?

how coarse sandy is the masonite? if they are not too coarse, I would just leave it and use 6mm renovation gypsum.

It's not very rough, but enough for the little girl to get abrasions if she drags the back of her hand against it, so it really shouldn't be a problem to put the plaster over it. But I think I can avoid buying new door casings if I remove the masonite first.
