I have read old posts about renovating stairs/steps and got some tips. We live in a townhouse and have an open pine staircase from '76 that will be painted white. The blue needle-felt carpet will go - the question is, what should we replace it with?

The problem for us is how to avoid a "patchwork" of wood material. Upstairs, the previous owner laid birch flooring. On the ground floor, there are two different types of wood flooring that meet near the start of the stairs: 35-year-old dark matte oiled sanded oak parquet and slightly lighter oak parquet from the '90s.
We don't want to spend a fortune since we're actually looking for a bigger house.

Some options that are ruled out:
- linoleum mat (slippery?)
- laminate (slippery?)
- new needle-felt mat (since we're removing the current carpet, it would feel fresh with a new material).
- white steps (dirt shows)
- Pre-made oak steps from Lundbergs - nice but expensive - 500 SEK/step

So what's left: parquet or buying some kind of wood that we paint?

Painting might be a good idea, then you can mix an oil paint that harmonizes with all these floors? Parquet, if it's possible to find something that works with the patchwork.

Long explanation but my questions are:
- Is there a competitor to Lundbergs expensive pre-made solutions?
- What wood material and type of oil paint are durable enough for stairs? Does anyone have pictures to share?

www.stepkit.com but I don't really know what the prices are like, I got a decent price on some leftover pieces when I shopped there.

A friend managed to install a Rusta-click floor where the carpet had been, maybe an alternative?

We put ikea laminate on the stairs

I would probably go for parquet - laminate flooring on stairs becomes both cold and easily cracks at the edges - I have seen it myself at a neighbor's house whom I later helped to redo the job with parquet instead.
We found a couple of odd packages sold via an ad on Blocket and got hold of cheap material that way. Then I bought a cheap hand router at Harald Nyborg and matching router bits and got started - thanks to the hand router, the result was excellent and it was quick to put the steps together.
As for wood species, oak parquet is both durable and reasonably nice to mix with other types of wood. Then it’s a matter of taste whether you want lacquered or oiled parquet.

In hindsight, I would probably also have opted for parquet, not because it would be cold and crack(?), but simply because it looks nicer.

When you are looking for a new home, I think that:
1. Leave it as is and let the next owner do what they want.
2. Remove the carpet, sand and oil; if it gets messy with all the types of wood, I would paint it white.
When you are thinking of selling, I think you should think neutrally and not how you want it.

Thinking like Totte...hehe, no it was magnusss :) We are considering selling and thinking of doing some moderate sanding and painting white.
