Hello,
I have a staircase from 1976 that I want to renovate. The staircase is straight and open, meaning without risers. On the treads, there is a black mat, something plastic-like.
My question is, is there a risk of asbestos if I tear off the mat?

Here's what my staircase looks like. (Maybe it's not even a plastic mat, linoleum mat??) Anyway, I'll upload a picture if it can help.

It wasn't that common with asbestos in 1976, but it might still have been present. I recommend that you send samples of the carpet and glue.

Curious, as I have similar "inserts" in my staircase, did you ever send in samples and were there traces of asbestos? My staircase is from 1972.

Then the risk of asbestos increases quite significantly. During those years, one might have transitioned from an asbestos-containing vinyl floor to an asbestos-free one with the same appearance.
