We are going to repaint the staircase to the upper floor, so I thought I would take down the stair railing to make it easier to sand and paint. At first, I thought I would disassemble everything, but I think I'll just do half at a time instead so the horizontal plank can stay in place. How can I smartly remove the plugs over the screw holes? I guess they are glued. If I drill them out, they might end up crooked, and I also risk damaging the screw head so that I can't remove the screw at all. Wooden staircase railing partially disassembled near a window with a view of trees and blue sky, showing screw hole plugs in the process of removal.

They were just crammed in, so it was no problem.
