Anyone have suggestions for the best solution? Is it worth renting a cleaning cutter for such a small area?

It must be faster to do it by hand than to go and rent a scarifier.
What surface finish are you planning to use afterwards?

Renting the cleaning cutter with a vacuum cleaner will be a major operation given how much mess it generates even with the vacuum cleaner running. A simple sanding block or just knocking off the protruding parts with a crowbar creates significantly less mess. If you remove the protruding parts, gaps don’t matter when you tile again, provided that tiles will go up where they were before.

Thanks for the reply! That sounds good. The plan is to fill the irregularities and use gypsum plaster or kitchen adhesive, and then primer on top of that. I will then tile all the way up to the ceiling. Do you recommend gypsum plaster or kitchen adhesive?

Since it was difficult to remove the tile adhesive with a crowbar and everything was already dusty due to the pipe renovation, it ended up being a quick job with a scarifier. It was well worth the hours of toil it would have been with a crowbar. The rental company is also just a stone's throw away, so everything was convenient. There was a huge difference using it without a vacuum cleaner. I noticed that when the nozzle came loose during work. But as you ants say, it gets dusty regardless. I've now applied some gypsum plaster to the holes. Is there anything else I should consider before tiling?

How did it go? Facing the same task in a few days :-)

It went well! Building the kitchen now, so the tiling has to wait a bit. The sanding machine in an industrial vacuum cleaner that I rented at Ramirent did the job in 30 minutes.
