Hello :)
We have a fireplace in the living room that takes up way too much space, and I'm wondering if we can remove the part that goes between the wall and the fireplace itself. I've drawn with red on the picture which part we would like to remove.
The "box" is divided in two; I suspect the lower part is some kind of air supply tunnel, and the upper part is used for wood storage.
As you can see, there is an air vent on the outside of the facade.

I appreciate any help I can get!

  • Fireplace with a section marked in red for potential removal. The marked area is adjacent to the fireplace, possibly used for air intake and wood storage.
  • A living room with a large white fireplace structure, partially dividing the space, with a wooden ceiling and floor, and a dining area with black chairs.
  • The image shows a corner of a room with a white, box-like structure filled with debris, cables, and a red book, next to a partially stripped wall.
  • Vent on a brick exterior wall surrounded by green rose stems with thorns, some leaves, and a tree stump in a garden setting.
Just get the big sledgehammer!

Went out and removed the cover from the air supply vent and this is what it looked like.

  • Air intake vent opened, showing a dusty and debris-filled pipe opening within a brick wall.

How much will it affect the supply air flow if I remove this part?
I still want to be able to use the open fireplace :)

You probably want supply air from the outside, otherwise it will take indoor air and blow it out, resulting in poorer combustion and you're essentially sucking out warm indoor air.

Can't you keep the hole in the wall and put a supply air vent that you can open and close? Then when you use the stove, you open it to get outside air in? Or am I completely off?

Exactly, a so-called "snurrventil"

Will it be enough as supply air?

Will it be enough to have as supply air then?

How often and how long do you light a fire? I think it's okay.

We have recently moved in and haven't used it yet. The idea is to burn occasionally in the winter to increase the coziness a bit. We have two small children so it won't be used a lot.

Go back to sleep then, it doesn't matter if you don't light it daily :)

It doesn't look quite right as it is done now. But if you remove it, it will look great!
In the absolute worst case, if a spinner vent isn't enough, you can actually build a small ventilation drum (a ventilation duct that you build in) that you can remove and place if the need arises.
It wouldn't look worse than it is now, especially since you're only going to use it for "myselda."

Got rid of what I wanted over the weekend! It ended up being a temporary solution on the floor until we lay the new floor.

  • Person cleaning construction debris in a room with unfinished walls and an old radiator, using a blue bag for removal.
  • A dining area with a temporary wooden floor solution, featuring a table, chairs, a highchair, and unfinished walls.
