Help!
I need to install tiles with faux brick design on the chimney behind the stove.
The chimney is painted with lime or plaster paint.
It leaves a chalky residue on your hands if you rub your hand over the surface.
1. The paint must be removed before tiling to ensure good adhesion, right?
2. What's the easiest way to remove it? Chisel/hammer and finish with a wire brush?

  • Wood-burning stove with visible fire, placed in front of a painted masonry chimney with chipped areas. Chimney surface appears chalky.
  • Close-up of a painted chimney with visible cracks and a rough surface, possibly chalk or gypsum paint, requiring preparation for tile installation.
  • Close-up of a painted chimney breast with visible chalk or gypsum residue, requiring preparation before tiling.

If scraping and brushing don't work, then sanding is required, unless you want to completely chip off the plaster..:
