I have a basement staircase in a cottage that goes down next to the basement wall to a bathroom in the basement. It is a framed gypsum wall with fiberglass insulation along the staircase (against the wall). Probably steel studs. Should the insulation be removed? Or does it increase the risk of mold on the inside of the gypsum wall since the gypsum wall would then become colder?

Other framed walls (wooden studs) in the basement were completely rotten and have been torn down. The ground is quite wet and the drainage is old.

It sounds like drywall doesn't belong in that basement; whether it's insulated or not, I think is of less significance.

Agree with the previous speaker, you should probably have bare walls there to let the moisture find its way out, but make a hole with a hole saw and take a look. Our basement had insulated walls with a substantial air gap behind and no moisture problems, but in a few places things had been placed directly against the wall and it was worse there.
