We have an old staircase that turns left up to the 2nd floor. Is it possible to remove the risers to achieve a more open construction without affecting stability?

Please help...

Well, it might be possible, but you'll probably get more springiness in the treads, which could cause them to rub against the stringers when you step on them, resulting in creaks. The stringers on old stairs often have some sort of cut-out for supporting the risers, and it might look quite unsightly if you remove the risers. So, no, I wouldn't do that anyway.

How old is the house?

I don't know if the stability changes, but you can reinforce under the treads with a small triangular strip or something similar. I assume the entire construction is visible? If you are going to paint the stringers, you can make pieces with a rip cut and "fill" the grooves after the risers. A little putty and paint then nothing shows.

Consult a staircase maker.
