We have a metal railing at the steps up to our front door that we have taken down (with MUCH effort) to sandblast and paint. The railings are attached with 3 hex screws M15(16?)x120 on each side. They are attached on the outside of the stairs. However, the screws are quite rusted, especially the thread and the “expanding”(??) part are rusty. Of course, I could replace everything, but the four screws that are lower are attached kind of INSIDE the actual stairs. They are kind of half embedded. I was thinking I would buy new screws in the same dimensions and use the old holes, but one of the screws is also broken, inside the stairs.

1: any general tips?
2: where can you find hex screws in those dimensions? M15/16x120?
3: what is the name of the presumably expanding nut solution being used?

Attaching pictures of the screw, how the mounts look today with the railing down, and from under the stairs where I tried to take a picture of the mount/nut from the inside.

  • Close-up of a rusty nut on a textured concrete step, shadow cast beside, illustrating issues with stair handrail fasteners.
  • Rusted hex bolts placed on a speckled surface, showing corrosion and wear, likely removed from a stair railing for repair or replacement.
  • Close-up of a rusty bolt hole set in a textured concrete step, showing corrosion around the edges and the inside of the hole.
  • Rusty hex bolt embedded in concrete on a stair edge, surrounded by rust and small stones in the surface, under clear blue sky.
  • Rusty metal bolt embedded in concrete staircase, showing corrosion and weathering around the fastening area.
  • Rusted hex bolt embedded in a concrete step, showing corrosion and wear, with surrounding textured concrete surface and some shadow.
  • Close-up of a concrete stair corner with visible rusted bolt remnants, surrounded by rough surface texture and small debris.
  • Rusty bolt end embedded in concrete, showing corrosion and damage. Part of a disassembled metal railing system.
  • Close-up of a rusty hex bolt with a metal bracket secured to a concrete surface; the hardware is heavily corroded, showing surface deterioration.

I think what you're looking for is called a slagankare and bolt. Check Beijer and similar places.

That's the one I was a bit unsure about myself too! I've been around to most of them now. Realized that it's room-tracking on the screw and not M.. ‍♀️ Didn't make the situation easier. Concluded that I probably won't find an identical screw but hope to be able to clean the plug from rust fairly well and the same with the screws (they are soaking in Coca Cola overnight now as a first step). We hope we can use the same screws again when the railings are put up..
