Hello!

We are finally ready with the expansion to cut an opening to move between the new and old part of the house. We have a log house, and the opening will, of course, be in the load-bearing exterior wall.

Can someone give me some advice on how we (if we have to) reinforce the load-bearing wall? I/H-beam?

Have a nice evening!

It is not at all certain that it must be reinforced; normally, an opening can be made anywhere in a log wall as long as you don't cut the bottom (and top) log course. But now I am speaking generally, as I do not know what it looks like in your case.

Hello there!
Thanks for your response!

Both the top and bottom beams will remain, but the top one is of course joined exactly where the opening is supposed to be (unfortunately, the opening cannot be moved). Additionally, I now see that there is a roof truss resting on that beam. I guess that "complicates" things a bit?

Have a great weekend!

Make a frame around the hole which then compensates for "the joint in the middle" with wood or steel around it, making it much stronger, and the horizontal reinforcements you can make longer on the outside and inside at the top and bottom. But I'm not a carpenter, so I don't know anything about professional implementation in the wood industry, so this is just an idea.
