Hello, I need to build a bathroom which involves running drainage pipes through the floor joist between the two levels in the house. The joist is 200 mm and needs to be drilled 120 mm for the pipe. I have to go through two joists, do they need to be reinforced in any way, does anyone know?
Best regards, Luppe :-/

It depends a bit on the span and the knotting, but it's easy to reinforce, so it's silly to take a chance...

Glue and screw a plywood piece ~15*195*1200 on both sides of the beam centered at the hole. Of course, you'll need to drill into the plywood too ;)

If you can also add cleats 45*195 (see below), then it's all good!

Try to drill as close to the center as possible!

Unfortunately, there needs to be a certain slope on the pipe, 1.5 cm/meter, so it will be at the top on one end and closer to the bottom on the next. Reinforcing still sounds like a good idea.
Kind regards, Luppe

Certainly, it should be 1 cm per meter but try to avoid the underside of the bjäken - that's where you have the greatest load!
