Hello! I am planning to build a 5.4 m long horizontal double fence, height 1.8 m, with 4 pieces of 95x95 posts. 95x22 pressure-treated decking wood.
Not very exposed to winds as the fence is protected between allotment cottages.
I also plan to connect two of the posts with joists to the allotment cottage which lies 1.7 meters from the fence. This should make it extra stable, right?
Is 500mm concrete footing enough or do I need 700mm footings?
The soil is dense clay at this depth.
Should there be a layer (gravel, base layer, stone) under the footings? What type of base layer? How thick?
Is some form of insulation needed around the footings against frost?
I also plan to lay paving stones nearby so that water can drain away.
I want to keep it as simple as possible!
Thankful for answers! / Peter

Hello Peter!

The fence needs lateral support at some point, otherwise it will be wobbly. Double planking is probably unnecessarily dense. Air gaps reduce the wind's impact.

Opt for 500 mm foundation blocks. It’s a fence, not a house. With dense clay soil, dig to the right depth. You won't be able to compress the base layer. A bit of sand or stone dust can help level the foundation block, but definitely not in large amounts. The downside to using treated wood is that it is planed. You can't paint it with slamfärg.
