Lutte, interesting! Do you have a warm or cold garage? How wide are your boards?

"Warm garage" only maintains 13-15+ in there, they are 145mm wide and 21mm thick.

If you're planning to nail 22 mm boards into a batten that's 22 mm and doesn't have solid support behind it, it's going to bounce like crazy when you nail. Screws are probably the way to go in this case, and as mentioned, the nails would be too short if they can't go through.
