We've bought a house from the 70s (1.5 floors, 160 sqm) that we want to renovate the ground floor of before moving in. It's new windows, floors, moving a wall, kitchen, and a bathroom.

What can be a reasonable time for this if we hire contractors? Need to know when to set the transfer date for our current residence.
The kitchen and bathroom clearly don't need to be completely finished before moving in. The bathroom can also be done after moving in.

Without numbers on surface area, more on the number of windows, walls, rooms

Half a year ;)

Joking aside. This is extensive. It will take time. And cost money.
What is your budget? What do the contractors say?

I had a colleague who did a similar project and had 6 contractors in for four months because they wanted it done before moving in. They paid 1.5 million :)

Of course, the kitchen and bathroom don’t need to be completely finished before moving in. The bathroom can be done after moving in.
3 months or more depending on a lot of things. It can be done quicker of course, but then it will be more expensive for you.

To clarify; it's the ground floor we want to renovate first and foremost. It involves 12 normal-sized windows (both upper and ground floor) and a patio door.

It feels so difficult to do a little at a time. We want the same flooring throughout the entire ground floor, walls need to be moved and demolished. Windows seem like a good idea to tackle first so we don't paint walls that then get ruined by window replacement - or am I thinking wrong?
Attaching two pictures of the floor plan, probably not to scale. But have marked the walls we want to remove and the wall we want to build up.

  • Floor plan showing living room, kitchen, and bathroom. Red lines mark walls to be removed and built for renovation on the ground floor.
  • Floor plan of the ground floor showing rooms labeled as vardagsrum, badrum, sovrum 1, sovrum 2, kök, and tvätt, with walls to be removed marked.

You need to look at the place to be able to decide. But expect about 3 months as I wrote.

Then it is good to remember that good craftsmen are not just standing around waiting but are often booked for several months ahead, possibly at least half a year when it comes to a job that requires many employees.

3-4 months WHEN they can finally start. Good craftsmen are often booked at least +6 months in advance.

Time is very difficult to determine! Either you leave everything to a company, and then they have to specify the time they need, which would probably be 1.5-4 months depending on how good they are at planning.

If you make sure to order materials in time that are delivered continuously and have booked electricity and plumbing in advance, you can reduce the total time quite significantly.

I've never done a total renovation before but have had craftsmen at home for building a deck, kitchen, and laying tiles in the hallway previously. I think 3-4 months sounds like a lot. How many people are you thinking then and how long for each part?
