Hi!

I'm about to buy quite large quantities of gypsum soon, but I'm a bit concerned about the quality of the different brands of gypsum available in the market.

For instance, I've heard that Lafarge might not be completely okay, but is that really true or is it just talk?

If anyone here on the forum has any experiences with different brands (advantages and disadvantages) of gypsum and its quality, I'd appreciate it if you could share.

Run with Danogips, the most common you'll find in hardware stores. Works fine but there are cheaper plasterboards.

What exactly do you mean by quality? A plasterboard is basically a simple construction that all manufacturers can handle.

You can find Lafarge, among others, at byggmax, probably why they might have gotten a reputation. However, I don't think there's anything wrong with them.

Some low-price boards feel softer and are like cutting damp plaster; they are also softer when you insert a plug into them.

My feeling is that the standard boards from the big ones, including lafarge, maintain similar quality and price. Gypsum is very price-pressured in the building trade. However, some stores, such as byggmax, also have low-price boards (in addition to their standard quality) that are really bad.

What I was thinking about was just how the different boards are to work with. How they hold up, etc.

I have, as mentioned, heard that Lafarge might not be completely reliable, but the price of the boards at Byggmax is certainly tempting... They are quite a bit cheaper than the other builders’ merchants on the market.

Excerpt from Byggmax:

BYGGmax budget drywall follows EU standards. The remaining drywall assortment follows the Swedish Standard norm.

I talked to someone at Byggmax customer service about that cheaper gypsum and they themselves wouldn’t recommend it for a regular house. In other words, it’s really budget we’re talking about. Swedish standard norms are probably good in this case.

When you order a larger batch, my experience is that it costs about the same everywhere, Byggmax will not be cheaper than other places (except for the budget gypsum).

Well, I've used Budgetgipset on occasion, including in the garage, where it goes through some trials. I've also used it for indoor walls sometimes and haven't received any complaints yet. However, it's only available as a 120 board, which isn't so fun to work with.

Lafarge isn't sold as a budget board, but is more to be considered like any standard board. It should be available as a 90 board too, which is quite handy when you have to carry 60 boards to an upper floor...

Otherwise, I perceive Gyproc as the most common in trade, but that's probably a regional issue.

(Just realized I used budget boards on top of the tretex in Mom's living room, no problems whatsoever.)

Knauf has a GDS board that does not meet all requirements concerning fire protection, sound, etc. Probably as good as their "regular" plasterboards but not classified.

Used norgips and Lafarge (not budget) when I built the shed, no major difference between them. Maybe slightly softer paper on Lafarge but nothing to fuss about.

Thanks for the info.

Then it's just a matter of getting started and hunting for prices...

Some experience I have with plasterboard is that upon delivery from Trivselhus, I received many boards that were defective (the surface of the boards was not smooth, several mm deep grooves), so clearly there are different qualities. Unfortunately, I don't know the brand now.

I have noticed that plasterboards can vary slightly in brittleness when stored outdoors (like at byggmax). In winter, cold and dry weather they can be a bit more brittle and creaky, whereas in humid weather the boards feel a bit softer (could be imagination).

I'm about to expand the garage a bit. Anything specific to consider when choosing drywall?
