"Wood preservatives, paints, or other substances should not be used for surface treatment in a way that could cause poisoning in pigs."
http://www.mmm.fi/el/julk/tavsikase.html

The above applies to pigs and perhaps only in Finland? Even if we can be accused of being pigs or swine, most of us want to live healthily and long. An excessively high percentage of children get asthma and allergies, adults die of cancer, etc., prematurely, without always really knowing why.

According to the Chemical Inspectorate, which we should trust, one should avoid wood preservatives as much as possible. To my surprise, I saw that they sell small, fine children's sandboxes made of treated wood, which made me think of everything else built outside, where children and adults spend time more or less unclothed.

Are there alternatives to pressure-treated wood for decking, railings, and stairs?

...uhhh...yes, but pets often chew on wood with a healthy appetite, which is why feeding troughs were often made from cherry wood, which apparently tastes bad. Should, against all odds, children chew on sandboxes with the same appetite, splinters in the throat would probably be a bigger danger ;)

Edit: Sandboxes made from cherry wood might be something eusa_think.gif

Building with non-treated wood is a safe alternative, right?
Otherwise, oak heartwood is quite durable (contains natural treatment, I heard somewhere).

Make it out of stone then, and you'll definitely avoid bite marks. ;)
