I have a balcony where I'm going to install a new railing, the "posts" currently at the front (corners) stand directly on metal. It's regular 22x45 lumber standing straight on the metal. How do you protect the end grain that will be straight against metal? Some kind of metal shoe or so?

Edit: Just thought of it, maybe just put galvanized brackets that hold the lumber a bit up and screw them into the metal base?

Not a bad idea you came up with yourself - sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees, right? :)

I usually attach a small piece of syllpapp/plastic or roofing felt on the underside.

Studs of 22x45? 22x45 is way too flimsy to be used as posts for a balcony railing. Regarding the attachment, it's not easy since you should only screw into the metal roof as a last resort or barely then, because it will start leaking in a few years. Is it not possible to build a sturdy railing instead that is attached to the facade and stands on the roof by its own weight?
 
Oops... I guess I didn't read the whole text. I agree about the undersized dimension of the posts.
The disadvantage, however, is if the railing is only attached to the facade, it risks being displaced at the front edge.

You have a valid point there. As I described, it is now. The "posts" in the corners are made of 22x45 that are assembled like corner boards, roughly. And they stand loosely on the metal roof but everything is attached to the facade.
