Hello to all the knowledgeable people on the forum!

My partner and I have just moved into a cooperative apartment from 1959. It's the first apartment we've bought, and therefore, the first renovation is about to begin. We have no previous experience with anything like this, but we look forward to learning from the process (read: your knowledge is invaluable)! I should also mention that this is my first post, but probably not the last :)

Now to the point....

When we removed the door frame around the front door, a piece of plaster?! that the brick wall is covered with came off. Of course, I should have cut through the paint and so on before I started prying (lesson learned!). Parts of what remains have also detached from the wall and sit like a loose shell on top.

Damaged wall surface showing layers of plaster and insulation, with visible holes and peeling material near a wooden door frame.
Close-up of a hand peeling off plaster from a wall, revealing insulation and the underlying structure.

The questions...
  1. What materials make up the different layers in the pictures?
  2. Should I remove the parts of the outer layer that are loose?
  3. How should I best rebuild what has been torn down and with what?

Thank you in advance!

This is probably an experience that most people who have started renovating an apartment with plastered walls can relate to.

Search here on the forum for "gipsputs" for the easiest method to repair minor damage to plastered walls.
