We have a single-story house from '88, a corner house. All spaces are filled to capacity, so the desire for more space is significant!

Since moving and changing houses is not an option for various reasons, the only thing left is to find a way to extend/renovate. This also turns out to be quite problematic since we mostly just want one more room. It's a bit silly to raise the entire roof and add another floor just for that! Expanding the building footprint is also difficult because the plot and house are squeezed into a residential area that doesn't allow just any "house shapes."

Now we've had the thought of converting a larger room in the existing attic! I don't know if this is possible in a single-story house though. Do you have any ideas or experiences with something similar? Our thought is to make a staircase up to a kind of loft where a larger (at least in terms of floor space) room is furnished. This would require that roof trusses need to be modified and framed, insulated, etc. My first thought is that it might be the cheapest way to get another room.

What do you think? Is it reasonable? What might it cost if builders were to do everything except the finishing touches?

Have you talked to an architect? They can sometimes come up with ridiculously simple solutions that you haven't seen yourself and instead be able to utilize the existing space in a different way. Alternatively, they can come up with the best solution for a possible extension. That cost can turn out to be profitable later! :D

Good luck!
