As it sounds - how durable is untreated plywood outdoors?
Do you need to go for marine plywood to have it outside (not on the ground), or can regular cheaper plywood withstand being outside if you surface treat/paint it

It depends on how exposed to water the plywood will be.
In exposed situations, you should choose marine plywood.
It is the glue that otherwise releases.

Thinking of building a bird table and maybe some birdhouses... Will definitely paint them, but of course, there will be significant exposure to weather and wind. On the other hand, if it lasts 3-4 years, I'm satisfied, then I probably will have gotten tired and want something new anyway
I usually use 12mm form plywood outdoors for various constructions, costing around 250:-/sheet for a 1200*2400. It definitely lasts 3-4 years, but I wouldn't choose it as a side material in a nest box, rather as the bottom and roof.
If you paint, it will last your desired 3-4 years. Use good primer and then topcoat, and you won't have any problems. Painted wooden facades are meant to last and do last longer than just a few years. I have personally built an outdoor table from glued pine board, it's painted "all around" and is in its third season – no signs that the paint is starting to peel yet or any other issues. It stands unprotected all year round, and I expect it to last at least as long again.
Good luck!

That was cheap. Byggmax charges 389 kr for formplywood 12 x 1200 x 2500. Since I have some casting projects in the pipeline, I'm curious where you get it at that price.AndersS said:
