Plug or screw directly? Particleboard, TV mount
Page 1 of 3
Hello,
I am going to mount a TV bracket on a wall that is a painted chipboard.
What type of plug should I use for that or should I just screw it directly into the chipboard?

If you know that it is only a normal particle board and you don't hit any studs at all, I would probably use molly plug.
No plug in wood!
You should screw directly in with any wood screw of your choice. However, chipboards may tend to crack, so it is often a good idea to pre-drill the holes. Use a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the "core" of the screw, and it will work excellently.

That's what I'm a little afraid of, depending on the quality of the particle board. It's a newly built apartment, so why they put up a wall with particle board, I'll let be unsaid.Janus82 said:

In that case, it's more likely that there's only plaster in the wall. Particle board as a surface layer has hardly been used since the mid-70s.
Take a small drill and bore where you want to set a screw for the mount. Then you'll see if it's plaster or particle board in the surface layer and you'll also notice if there's particle board or OSB behind the plaster.

Of course, you're just using wood screws for this. Plugs and other things are used where there is nothing for the threads to grip. It's some new strange trend to use plugs and drywall anchors in wooden walls. Really weird.
Here is my favorite screw for this type of installation, available for example at Hornbach. 6mm

If you feel like stepping up to 8mm, there are other suitable screws, and then it doesn't hurt to pre-drill a bit as well.

If there are multiple holes to screw the bracket with, I would put several screws directly into the board. Pre-drilling minimizes chipping on the backside of the board and makes it stronger.

This is a good screw if you want to step up to 8mm, drills well but as @prototypen says it doesn't hurt to pre-drill a bit in OSB and chipboard.

Biltema also has a similar screw that is cheaper, but also good.
This one from gunnebo is also nice. Not as good a drill tip but it's nice that it is fully threaded at least for shorter lengths, like 8x40.

These are the boards I was thinking of, if it would be chipboard. I saw that Huntonit has something similar but it seemed to be mdf.

I'm going to install a handle outside the shower and support next to the toilet for my father-in-law, with chipboard walls and no idea if I can hit the studs...
Will screws hold, or should I use something like Molly?
