I have an old plastic mat on our basement stairs that is damaged in one spot. This is not something we did; rather, someone tried to tear away a piece a long time ago.

Has anyone on the forum sent in an analysis of a mat with a similar appearance and confirmed that it contains asbestos? The light foam/cardboard-like layer looks suspicious.

We are going to renovate the stairs and have never thought about this before.

Damaged old plastic mat on a basement staircase with a rough, light-colored layer exposed beneath. Possible concern about asbestos presence.

Don't see anything in the picture that looks like asbestos.
Asbestos has fibers like small needles.

I would like to borrow the thread, I have a staircase as shown in the image below. I haven't torn up the carpet yet; is it plastic or linoleum on the steps, and do you think there is asbestos? The house was built in 1976.
