How warm do you imagine the chimney should be on the outside really? Our chimney has wallpaper on it...
If the house is old, I recommend lime mortar, otherwise some form of KC-bruk. I have personally plastered with Maxit Serpo 135 "Handputs," which I found very easy to work with.
Color doesn't matter. But lime paint is nice!

There are pigments to mix into the plaster so it is almost the same color as the paint you will use, making cracks less noticeable. You can also advantageously paint with textured paint to prevent cracks from showing.
Do you have any tips on a stylish color to paint a chimney breast?
I have a white-painted chimney breast that doesn't contrast nicely with my white walls. I would prefer the brick color (unpainted) but it's too much work to remove the paint. Could I paint it in some kind of brick or rust color, do you think?
