I have an old chimney that in the basement had connections for a furnace and a stove in the laundry room, among other things.

My thought is if it's possible to remove stones and build the insert directly into the chimney without risk? Does anyone have experience?

I can imagine it's not a good idea to try dismantling half of a chimney base. The entire chimney rests on the lower part and it's heavy. Removing part of the supporting section is not advisable. It might be worth having a visit from the chimney sweep to get information about what's possible in your case. It might be better to have a freestanding stove with a pipe leading into the chimney.

Yes. You're probably right.

If there is space for a standalone stove, it is a much better solution. Much less work, better heat emission overall, simpler. A bit risky to make such a large alteration at the base of a chimney.

🙏. Then we'll go with that. There's space. Thanks
