I'm about to start working on the basement...
I got a handle on the floor, which was the only thing I was planning to do, but now I'm a bit tempted to do more...
I would like to cover the walls with wood paneling, I've read around on the forum but can't really figure it out.
The house I live in was built in '46, and as of now we haven't noticed any moisture problems.
But how do you go about it?
Should you install steel studs, drywall, and then paneling, or can you somehow install paneling directly on the steel studs?
Is it perhaps plain stupid to use wood paneling in a basement?
If you choose to drywall, does regular drywall work or should you opt for the more expensive wet room drywall?
I'm really not sure, I get different information when reading different threads. Then I read in a DIY article that they used wood studs and insulation set a bit away from the walls, but it feels like mold would thrive under there, right?
Grateful for any tips and ideas regarding basement renovation.

If I wanted paneling on the basement wall, I would install steel studs with a ventilated air gap behind. That is, the studs a few centimeters away from the wall and with ventilation both at the bottom by the baseboard and at the top by the ceiling molding, so that the air behind can circulate.
b8q is correct there.... Just try to avoid organic material inside the wall.... Like, gypsum board... (the paper is organic)
Steel studs work perfectly fine, you can if you want place a steel strap horizontally in the middle of the steel studs to screw the panel in the middle too.....

Or is it enough to frame with an air gap against the outer wall and then cover with regular plasterboard, or panel?

no, but skip the plasterboard... just unnecessary cost, do as I described and it will be fine....insulate with rock wool as I said, and leave an air gap towards the foundation wall...
If you want to be even more precise with venting, don't let the panel go all the way down, but leave about 8 mm... And drill holes in the metal rail you are going to use as a sill plate....

Okay, thanks for the tip, so so I can attach the panel directly to the steel studs?
But then I guess you have to choose to screw, it's a bit tricky to nail into steel

Drill holes in the track against the floor then? Should the rule be placed on top of the Platon mat or stop the mat before the Platon, do you think?
Can you just run tie wire on the back of the studs, do you think? Because it's probably not great if the mineral wool is against the wall.

It's like you say that steel studs are useless for nailing... The important thing should be that you don't have direct contact of wood against outer walls, or at the bottom of interior walls. If you want paneling, I would first screw horizontal wood battens (about 22*45) with some plastic material as spacers against the wall. Preferably about 10 mm thick (total build-up about 32 mm). Set about 4 battens (10 cm from the floor, 10 cm from the ceiling, 2 in between). Then you "nail" the panel directly (without insulation). Use a list nailer (electric or air, available cheaply at, for example, Biltema). Leave about a 10 mm air gap at the bottom and top for air circulation behind. Mount the baseboard with spacers too so air gets in at the bottom, any ceiling molding should also be mounted to leave a small air gap at the top. This works 100% surely if the basement walls are not too damp (like if water is running down them). It's important to have a ventilated backside. This is lost if you put any form of insulation behind... Forget about drywall completely.
No, you should not. Insulation should be on the outside for the simple reason that you want to ensure the dew point stays OUTSIDE the wall, not in or inside. No surprises there.magnu said:

The moisture is naturally present in the concrete slab..... So if you want to have it really moisture-free, you should remove all organic material and seal most of the vents you have... but save one for intake and one for outlet.... Then you can relax.... For a really serious job, you should cover the ground with plastic sheeting, anchor it so it doesn't shift... Then lay a layer of Leca stones over it, about 40 cm...... if space permits.... After that, you can discuss whether your wall holds... I also recommend using steel studs and paperless drywall, if it's in a moisture-prone basement.....gaia said:
