What materials can be used on walls instead of drywall? I think drywall is worthless when you have heavy items to hang on the walls. One room has regular chipboard, but there are cracks along the seams so the wallpaper has split. Since I'm renovating several rooms anyway, I'm curious about what can be used. A friend said you could use flooring chipboard... well, what do I know?
You can basically throw up anything (in principle) on the wall. In old houses, you often find plank walls. Easy to hang things on, burns nicely too.
As Roary points out, particle board with plaster is a good compromise. Easy to mount things on, more fire-resistant, easy to repair if there are holes, you avoid wallpaper cracking, if the house doesn’t settle properly.
Personally, I don't like wallpaper, so in my house, the paint is applied, not pasted.

First chipboard (regular works excellently, floor chipboard is more expensive and also extra work) then plasterboard is my choice for the win. It does cost a bit extra, but then you have nice, solid walls and don't have to think about Molly plugs and other depressing phenomena when you want to hang something on the walls.
Personally, I would have chosen OSB behind the plasterboard because it is a more stable wood panel than particle board. The ultimate choice, if the budget allowed, would have been plywood instead of OSB, but they are significantly more expensive. However, plasterboard is the only proper surface material.
