As the title suggests, we are going to open up a window and install a patio door. The window is currently 120x130 (wxh), and we plan to cut down to the floor so the patio door will be 120x240. The house was built in '23, brick construction, wall thickness about 35cm.

The question is whether we need to install a beam above the future patio door?

Also, if anyone knows approximately what the cost of making the opening might be. The house is located in Malmö.

If you are only going to install a patio door that is as wide as the current window, you should not need to reinforce above, as this has presumably already been done since you have the window there.

Yes, you should level above the door if there is no leveling for the window. The easiest and cheapest way is with angle iron, which can be visible, or hidden flat iron. Unfortunately, I cannot answer what the cost of drilling will be.

Is it on the gable or the long side?

It's on an end wall.

If there hasn't been a beam above when there have been windows, I don't see why you would need one if you're not widening more and just cutting downward. Additionally, you don't have the same load on a gable as on a long side. On a gable, you can normally make openings without reinforcement (at least on wooden houses with wooden facades). Now, I'm not a pro, so please wait until someone more knowledgeable can confirm what I've written :)
