Open up gable outer wall for window in 1920s house?
Hi,
we are going to install a window in a gable exterior wall in our house from '25. However, I'm a bit unsure about how the loads are distributed in the gable. If it were on the long side, I would be more familiar with the loads that need to be managed (simply the beams).
Do we need to install something and what exactly should be replaced?
Dimension for the beam? 2x8 inches? and then 2x3 (total 4) as posts?
We recently removed a window (with a carpenter) on a long side. I have attached a picture of how the wall looked there.
The window in the picture is what we're going to put in the new hole. It is 13Mx14M.
I tried searching for it on the forum before writing the post, but I didn't find anything, maybe didn't search for the right thing.
Thanks in advance

I get a bit unsure about how the walls are constructed. In the picture, the wood looks like horizontal planks (i.e., tongue and groove), but it might just be simple boards. Most of the wall should be vertical planks (about 3 inches thick) if the house is built in 1925. The configuration and direction of the load-bearing frame are important for determining which measures are most crucial.
I think it is standing 3 inches with horizontal tongue-and-groove and shavings in between alternately. You can see the cavity under the window. There were shavings there. But as I said, that's the long side, I don't know how the gable wall is constructed.

Plank walls function somewhat like panel constructions. A gable wall mostly bears its own weight. Offset above the window with a horizontal plank piece. Preferably, it should be beveled at the ends so that it rests on the two vertical plank pieces located on either side of the window opening.

I don't think so.
