I am planning an extension and want to open up the exterior wall where the extension will be, on the long side of the house. My house is 1 1/5 stories and 8.1m wide. The opening should be about 5m wide. According to a calculation program for glulam beams, I need a beam that is 140x315, but in this program, the heart wall is not taken into account as far as I can see. In any case, I have a ceiling height of 2.4, so if the beam is placed below, it ends up at 2.08, which feels a bit low. How can one calculate the dimensions for a steel beam instead?

Thankful for an answer

Use the search function and read in other threads about glue-laminated beams vs steel beams. There is a link somewhere to a conversion table.

A steel beam is also included, right? Does the extension apply to the upper floor as well? I'm primarily thinking of other solutions.

Thanks for the tip about the conversion table, that's what I wanted.

Yes, a steel beam will also be used, but it will be significantly smaller, and the ceiling height won't be so low. The extension only applies to the ground floor.

If you have the opportunity, fit the beam on the upper floor and secure the floor joists with hängseljärn. That way, you won't need to have the beam on the lower floor.
