I'm in the process of tearing down certain parts of a room. I've come across a material that I can't quite identify. It's basically nailed directly to the stone walls apart from some kind of paper, which I guess is old wallpaper against the stone. It's about 2cm thick. This board is found in several places and I've had to remove it in some areas.

My question is what I can replace it with nowadays, i.e., similar boards and paper? Otherwise, I feel like I have to tear down all the surrounding walls, which I would prefer to avoid.

Does anyone recognize it and have a good solution for attaching to a stone wall?

  • A hand holding a piece of old, fibrous building material with layers peeling off, over a pile of similar debris.
  • Old, textured wallboard with peeling paper, possibly wallpaper, revealing floral patterns, used against stone walls; part of a renovation project.
  • Damaged wall section with exposed material layers, including crumbling brown board and stone, near plumbing pipes in a renovation project.
The board is called tretex. Not good to install something without a ventilation gap in a basement if it is not drained and insulated externally. I would have framed up new with metal studs, more ventilation at the top and bottom. As a board, I would have used something that doesn't mold and preferably doesn't absorb moisture so much.

Kind regards, fremax

Thanks! But it's not a basement, it's ground floor and there is drainage. Concrete slab as floor.

You can run 2x chipboard 10mm or 2x gypsum 15&6mm, or tretex again, but it seems to be most common in 12mm thickness..

Great Thanks!!, nothing directly against the stone before e.g. foil or some form of paper?

No, skip the plastic. The cardboard serves no purpose in this case.
