Hello!

We live in a brick house made of Lommategel (made from clay) from 1890. We are currently renovating the bathroom. We have removed the chipboard that was inside the inner brick wall and see that the mortar is a bit poor between some bricks. It has fallen out and cracked a little, but not too much. Should we fill in with new mortar or is it okay that a little is missing? Can we use regular modern mortar or should we have a special mix for old Lommategel?

Eventually, we will also need to fill in the mortar on the outside of the house. Is there anything special we need to consider then?

Regards from Anna

Know nothing about clay tiles, but I think you should avoid cement in/on your brick walls. Lime mortar/plaster feels more right. gaia
