Noise from Footsteps on the Floor BELOW
This may be the wrong forum as my question concerns a multi-family building, but I think the expertise on this forum is exactly what is needed to solve my problem.
I live at the top of a 3-story stone building from the 1940s. I hear every step the neighbors downstairs take. Otherwise, the house isn't particularly soundproof and I don't hear anything else except for the footsteps.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be due to? Could it be the neighbor's floor being tense against a wall that causes the vibrations to be transmitted further? Could they have put up a new interior wall on an old floor and tightened the wall between the ceiling and floor? Does anyone have any other idea what it could be?
Grateful for any clues!

It's not a ventilation duct running under their floor that is connected to your apartment? These can transport sound well.
The heating pipes to the radiators also have a very good ability to transmit all kinds of sounds between apartments. If the floor is tightly against these without a gap in between, it can be a reason why you hear footsteps.
Thank you for your tips! There are no ventilation pipes under their floor, but I can imagine that they have laid the floor right against the heating pipes. I will look out for this next time I visit their apartment.
