There is a leak at a skylight, so we started to tear it down a bit there.
What we discovered then is that there is no air gap between the insulation and the roof panel. There is also no vapor barrier on the inside of the insulation.

The house is old, from 1937. Is this a construction technique that has been applied in the past or is it pure ignorance when the house was once upon a time additionally insulated?

What kind of insulation was it?
If you are going to add insulation to old houses, you should probably not use plastic but go for environmentally friendly insulation like flax, wood fiber-based or something...

Fiberglass or something like that

I have glass wool in the walls of our 1920s house, without an air gap and without plastic. It's not smart, but it might work according to the carpenter we talked to. In most rooms, we will remove the insulation and keep our fingers crossed that we don't freeze to death.

Ok, then it's not just here that it's done that way. That was at least a little comforting to know. :)
