After casting a concrete quay partially adjacent to water (Stockholm archipelago), several cracks have appeared, see image. Besides not looking good, the question is whether we should be concerned about issues such as frost damage. We have not made the final payment to the contractor, and now they want to apply Betasil. What do you think, should we approve the job? Similar cracking patterns are found in 5 places.

  • Cracks on a newly poured concrete pier near water, showing surface imperfections and potential frost damage concerns. Shoes visible at the bottom.

Reading up on Betsil, that's exactly what the product is designed for.
Apparently, it is supposed to penetrate 2 cm into the concrete and crystallize there.
However, I have no idea about its durability outdoors, in harsh climates, etc...

Okay, thank you forsvaret, any comment on the cracks themselves should one approve this?

Can't you get hold of an expert to inspect/inspect the work?

Yes, if I pay about 8000kr and arrange transportation to an island in the archipelago... not quite ready for that yet.

Was the concrete well reinforced in the mold?
I would worry a little about the future, get an inspector there.
However, I think it just dried too quickly in the heat.
Did you water them afterwards and lay plastic on the concrete after casting?

Yes, I believe it was, apparently special concrete that didn't need to be vibrated or watered.

Okay, thanks for the advice, I will look into it further.

All concrete needs to retain moisture, no matter what. Applying plastic afterward reduces the risk of cracks.

The concrete known as SKB is usually advised against being poured in such constructions as it has a greater tendency to crack. Those cracks are too wide to be left untreated as water will seep in, causing the rebar to rust and frost damage can occur.

Thanks for the information, they say they will apply Betsil to seal the cracks, but I don't know if that's enough...
I don't know what should be done, you can't just redo concrete, or they might have to cast another layer.

Betsil doesn't do anything to the cracks. It's just a dust binder.
