New window in Hollow Concrete Block
Hi, we are in the process of installing a window in our split-level house. The window will be placed on the first floor, towards the back, so we will excavate at the back and then cast a light well.
Now to the technical question. The wall is made of hollow concrete blocks and is about 30 cm thick. We need help with which beam to use for load-bearing.
The window's placement is 25 cm from the outer edge of the wall and 10 cm down from the lower edge of the façade brick. The window dimensions are 150L and 50H. It is a fixed window.
Attached are some drawings. And yes, we have contacted the building office in the municipality regarding a building permit. I assume one might need to insert an H-profile beam, but as mentioned, I want help with documentation with calculations for the beam that will be placed.
Grateful for any response, regards Linuz

No one who can help?
Also dug out a bit at the back of our house and put in windows and a patio door. I had a ceiling height of 2.14 in the basement. The door we installed is 200 high, so the beam had to be an HEB beam 10*10 cm. Don't forget to shore up before you open the hole. We also had 30 cm hollow block concrete
Maybe a bit of a late reply but good luck anyway
Hi mansson84 thanks for the reply, we haven't done anything yet as we are still collecting quotes and have not received the calculations from the building consultant we first contacted in November. So we will be getting a new building consultant this spring to get the calculations right.
How did you calculate the beam?
Best regards, Linuz //

My contractor suggested knocking off the plaster, cutting a groove in the concrete with an angle grinder, inserting an L-beam into the groove, and plastering over it. Then do the same from the other side of the wall to create something resembling a U-beam. This likely reduces the need for much bracing.
Unfortunately, it wasn't done last summer because the company that was supposed to do the job asked for 35,000 SEK for it. It should cost half that. Feel free to share what you have to pay and how it goes.

Hello
We installed the strongest beams that could fit. I borrowed supports from a friend, and the 4 m beams cost 2000 SEK.
So renting the machine, beams, and some plaster and such for the reveals cost 4000 SEK.
We also installed a regular window where there was already a basement window. We made it the same width but sawed for height instead. We didn't add any new beam there, as there was already one in place. It's probably just some kind of L-iron lying there.
It feels like the beams we installed are over-dimensioned.
In total, we have made four openings. Two windows at 8*11, one at 6*6 (WC), and a window connected to a patio door 2 m wide.
Good luck
