Maybe I'm posting this question in the completely wrong thread now, but I couldn't find a better one.

I'm considering buying a house built in '59. I've read around the forum and many people put up studs and new plasterboards on their interior walls. Is that recommended?

Isn't it enough just to sand, spackle, and repaint, or should you always go with new ones? Is it the quality of the wall that determines it? How do I know if I should replace it?

If the wall is acceptably straight, looks okay, and doesn't have any cracks or marks from old water damage or similar issues, there's no reason to do more than just spackling and painting.

However, if the walls are made of something like Tretex material (which is a porous form of wood fiberboard) and perhaps have been wallpapered a few times and have a crack in a seam, the quickest and simplest solution is often to put up renovation plasterboard. This will give you a good base to work from.
