I will be nailing the board-and-batten siding and have some questions regarding nail size. I have installed 28x70 battens outside the outdoor gypsum and will be using vertical board-and-batten siding. Base panel 22x145, batten 22x45.
I have read that the nails should not be so long that they damage the wind barrier behind the siding.
Does that mean I can only use 50mm (22+28) nails to fasten the base panel?

Can't imagine there's any harm with the outdoor plaster, it might be a problem if you have some fabric behind the batten.
I had the same conditions as you and did everything with 3" nails.

Alternatively, fasten the cover batten with 4" so it can better hold the edges of the panel board if it starts to warp. Use 3" for the panel board and only nail in the middle. There are different theories regarding double nailing as well, but the risk is that you might get cracks in the panel as it dries.
Or you plan in advance so that you have studs lying behind the nail battens, then the nails can be as long as needed since the fabric is pinched between the stud and the nail batten.
Note, a tip mainly for those who have fabric, as mentioned, you should have exterior gypsum and then it's probably less sensitive if it's punctured.
