Should I use a list with nail plugs? I used a short piece of the list as a test and am not satisfied with the result. As I suspected, the screw and nylon plug stick out (1.5mm) and can't be neatly hidden, even with a cover cap. Do I need to countersink and pre-drill before mounting? I can't find any information on this anywhere. Feel free to see the picture.

Use red plugs and trim screws instead, I think it gives a nicer result.

Yes, it's a good option. White-painted trim screws or trim nails are hardly noticeable. The advantage of using a spikplugg is the ability to hit the hole easily without having to remove the trim; with a countersink, it's just an extra step I can do with the screwdriver I have along with the hammer drill. I went off earlier and got a countersink drill bit and was actually very pleased with the result. It’s really the cover plate that might be up for discussion, but I think it will hardly be noticeable.

I would be satisfied. It's probably no one other than you who sees a problem. It's usually like that with constructions, the one who did the work sees lots of things they're not satisfied with, but no one else does.
