I will attach studs 45x120 around a newly opened hole in a wall. On one side, I need to insert blocks/shims with a thickness of 0-40mm. How should I attach the studs in the simplest way possible? Nails or screws?

What do I do where there is 90mm of wood before I reach the solid wood?

it's all the same, just make sure to use a nail long enough that at least one third of it penetrates the solid wood.

Screw. Gentler on the wall and easier to handle. Then you can put it in reverse if you have done something a little less "good".
