I was thinking of asking for a nail gun for my 30th birthday since I thought it might be useful for our house construction. Now I'm just wondering what kind of nail gun I should wish for. What needs to be nailed is primarily moldings and exterior paneling. Is it even possible to use a nail gun for that?

And if it is, does anyone have any tips?

Grateful for quick responses because my birthday is on Tuesday :D

There are two different use cases that require two different types of tools.
For molding, you need a brad nailer, which shoots 15-50mm brads.
For paneling, you need a framing nailer, which shoots 50-90 mm nails.
Both tools are excellent to use for their respective purposes.
Do you have a compressor? Otherwise, you might start by putting it on your wish list.

Feel free to wish for a slightly more expensive variant than the very cheapest ones. Not necessarily better reliability, but rather easier handling. Preferably choose a nail gun with adjustable impact power on the gun, for example, so you don't have to keep fiddling with the pressure regulator on the compressor to get the gun to drive the nails in just right.

I don't have a compressor, I didn't even know it was needed... And it's not good that two different guns are necessary for what I want to use it for. Maybe I should aim for one that shoots 50-90mm because it feels easier to nail the moldings with a hammer. Then it might feel a bit more useful if I also think about garage and deck building.

Easy handling is definitely something I want. And as for the price, it's a few thousand. My sister got a canoe when she turned 30, so about the same price range as a canoe is the benchmark :)

Thanks for the tips. Any suggestions on brand and model anyone?

senco makes fine nail guns. I have a frame Pro 602, and it's really nice. Senco is a world leader in nail guns, they've been at it for quite some time, so I would recommend them.

I cannot recommend Senco's nail gun. Senco is a mid-range brand like Dewalt or Bosch but certainly not a leader in nail tools. I personally have three and am not satisfied. I mainly use Haubold's nail gun that Cramo or Ramirend lend out. Even the cost of nails is something to consider. Coiled Coil nails are 30% cheaper than straight collated.

Would this be sufficient? It's a Senco listed with the name Nail Gun 50 - 90 mm A900FN 1/4". Frame pro 602 seems to cost twice as much.

What else do you need to buy? A compressor? Anything else?
It's good enough for framing and panel nailing.

I can suggest Biltema's 50-90 mm gun, costing just under 1500:- and it worked fine for me during the garage construction.
Might be an alternative if you don't want to spend a large amount, or need/want to buy 2 guns.

Saying that Senco is a mid-range brand seems a little strange to me.

Then Biltema's should probably work for me too. Then I can buy a smaller one for my partner for his birthday, so we'll have 2 :) I've read another discussion about Biltema's nails, whether they are good enough for the façade or if they would rust. Any opinion on that?

I think a coworker bought Biltema’s for his garage a few years ago, haven't heard him complain at all.
I personally went with Essve’s since they were available at the place where I buy all other building materials.

Middle class on Bosch, yes I can agree with that if you mean their consumer tools, the professional series is not a middle class series.

Byggankan: you will need a compressor and hose.

I also have advanced thoughts on buying a gun, more towards the nail gun type as I'm mainly going to use it to install beadboard paneling in the ceiling and moldings... can anyone recommend a good one? I've read on the forum that 18ga (1.2mm) is too weak... is this correct?

16g is said to be 'the right way' to go for roof nailing.
It might work with 18g, but the question is whether it's worth the risk?

I chose an 18g believing it would work for everything, but I might need to get a 16g when/if the roof is to be nailed.
Senco FP18MG from www.tools-plus.com ended up costing about 1300:- including shipping and fees, I'm really satisfied with the purchase so far, I've done the molding in a living room so far.

I bought a set with 2 guns, one for brads and one for nails up to 90mm. Everything cost 1,400:- at: http://www.verktygsboden.se
Works perfectly even with a cheap compressor for 1,300:-
I also bought a roofing nailer and it's probably the best purchase I've made. Wonderfully simple and time-saving to nail the roofing felt onto the roof. :-)

Bought an additional roofing nailer and it's probably the best purchase I've made. Wonderfully easy and time-saving to nail down the roofing paper. :-)
That sounds good. Where did you buy the compressor?
