Should you use special nails when nailing together a door frame?

I disassembled a frame to modify the length (exterior door). I noticed that the nails were completely smooth. I started thinking about that now that I'm going to put the frame back together. But the nails that were there I have thrown away.

I wondered if it had to do with the flexibility of the frame

Does anyone know?
