As the title says, is there any construction advantage to keeping the boards that were the frame for the old stretched ceiling and adding some cross boards, or can I just as well tear down the frame and nail the panel directly to the raw boards?

  • Ceiling with wooden panels, a hanging light fixture, and an unfinished frame around a window. Discussion about retaining or removing the old frame.

If you don't want to redo the wiring, which can preferably be done between the raw boards and the bead boards, then I don’t see any reason not to nail directly to the raw boards if they are a sufficiently flat surface. That’s what I would have done, but someone else might think differently.
It’s nice to save every cm of ceiling height, and you don't seem to have an excess of ceiling height exactly ;-)

Tore down the boards as they were already full of nails. The råspont feels flat and nice, so it should be good to nail the panel against it. The electrical wiring will be left as it is in good condition, admittedly from the later part of the 60s but the cables look fresh.

The ceiling height is probably higher than it appears to be, 240 cm.
