Hello! This week we are getting the keys to our new house, and there's quite a bit of renovation to do. It's a 1.5-story villa from the 1930s on a crawl space foundation. I was planning to move a wall that is most likely load-bearing, but when I checked the foundation through the ventilation openings this weekend, there was a support wall approximately in the middle. I'm suspecting that the wall I want to move is right on top of this support wall. Is it possible to move the wall 50-100cm, or do I need to arrange some support to the ground? I understand that it's just guesses since no measurements/dimensions are known, but what does experience suggest?
Hi! We are getting the keys to our new house this week and there will be quite a bit of renovation. It's a 1.5-story villa from the 1930s on a crawl space foundation. I was thinking of moving a wall that is most likely load-bearing, but when I checked the foundation through the ventilation openings this weekend, there was a support wall roughly in the middle. I'm wondering if the wall I plan to move is right on this support wall. Is it possible to move the wall 50-100cm or do I have to arrange some support down to the ground? I understand that these are just guesses since no measurements/dimensions are known, but what does experience suggest?
If it's a load-bearing wall, my guess is that you'll need to transfer the load of the wall you want to move. If you can move the wall 50-100cm without transferring the load, you will likely need to provide support under the wall, down in the foundation. However, these are highly speculative thoughts. There are others here much more knowledgeable.
Now I'm almost done with the demolition, just need to lift the blind bottom. I was worried that the framework above was built on the same principle, but after showering in shavings it doesn't seem to have any joints, at least not on the wall. They've used solid framing wood, in the floor it's about 75×200mm.
Even wider in the ceiling, though a bit lower.
