Hi!
I have just moved into my first own house (wohoo!) and have lots of ideas but a bit lacking in knowledge in some areas. In the living room, I want to move a door in a load-bearing interior wall (see picture). The area where I want to place the wall sounds hollow when I knock on it, so it should be wooden studs + particle board.
My approximate plan of attack is:
- Ask an electrician to come and remove all cables to outlets and the light switch
- Remove the old door frame and door
- Ask "someone who knows" to come and frame over most of the door and extend the existing hole a bit. Who do I need here? Is a regular carpenter enough, or do I need someone with better knowledge of load-bearing constructions? Also ensure to coordinate with the electrician so that new conduits for the electricity are installed, as we want switches and outlets next to the new door.
Do I need to apply for a building permit or something similar for this, since I'm dealing with a load-bearing structure? It feels like a minor modification as I'm just moving a hole and not creating a new one, but what do I know...
The reason for moving the door is that I want to have a sofa where the TV stands and have the TV on the other side of the room, but it would be unreasonably small if I don't move the door...
Thankful for any help
Edit: The picture is being difficult.
